After leaving WWF in 2001, Laurer modelled and appeared on TV. Her 2000 Playboy cover sold over 500,000 copies in its first month. In June 2001, her memoir debuted at #3 on the New York Times Best Seller list and stayed in the top 10 for six weeks.
Laurer moved often as a child because her parents split when she was eight. She started weightlifting at 16 to cope with family instability. She struggled with depression after her stepfather died in her late 20s. From 2005, she suffered with alcoholism and prescription drug abuse, requiring repeated rehab stays between 2006 and 2014.
She joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 2014 for spiritual rebirth. She was briefly imprisoned for public drinking in Tokyo (2014–2015). Her last public appearance was at a wrestling event in Los Angeles in January 2016, where she spoke about mental health.

Kathy was the youngest of three biological children. During her initial bodybuilding competitions in 1988 and 1990, Kathy Laurer trained with her sister, Kathy, subsequently Kathy Hamilton. Sonny was a minor character who rarely appeared in public with his renowned sister.
At her peak in 1999, Laurer earned over $1 million annually from WWF salary, merchandise royalties, and appearance fees. Her 2000 Playboy deal earned $250,000, and her memoir advanced was $500,000. From 2005 to 2015, court fees and rehabilitation destroyed her resources notwithstanding these profits. Her estate was worth $75,000 in residual royalties and personal effects when she died in 2016.
A member of D-Generation X, Kathy Laurer was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame at WrestleMania 35 in 2019. Her mother gave a dedication speech to over 15,000 spectators.
